Discovering Reptiles & Amphibians
Herpetology is a big word! It is the study of reptiles and amphibians! Scientists study all sorts of things about animals such as where they live, what they look like, what they eat, and more! And it covers a LOT of animals! From lizards to turtles, alligators, snakes, newts & salamanders – there are literally thousands of animals and species that scientists study every day around the world!
You may be wondering why anyone would study herpetology! Scientists that study herpetology not only discover new species of animals we’ve never seen before, but they also learn a lot about the ecosystem! (that’s where an area where the animal lives!) These animals can help keep pests away from food we are growing, show us that there are too many chemicals in an area, or show us that their habitat is a healthy environment!
Herping is a popular activity for many kids and adults! Herping involves going outside and searching for reptiles and amphibians! Make sure that you understand herping safety rules though! There are even clubs around the world that meet and herp together! It’s a great way to meet new friends and learn about new species!
