Herping Safety for Kids

Herping is one of my favorite things to – but there are a few safety tips you need to learn before you handle any reptiles or amphibians! And when dealing with any animals, DO NO HARM. Please leave animals where you discover them – do not take them into a new habitat where they do not belong.

ALWAYS let an adult know where you are going!

Chances are you’ll have an adult with you when you’re hiking, but make sure not to wander off and always have an adult’s permission before separating from your group!

No trespassing! Follow park rules!

Never break park rules to go herping! If an area is designated as a “no trespassing” area or wildlife refuge area – stay out!

Wear protective clothing, boots, gloves, etc.

While herping there will be many times when you wade through muddy slushy water or accidentally come across a critter that bites. Be prepared with good sturdy boots, gloves, bug spray, etc.

Never handle an animal that you are not 100% sure what species it is.

This is the hardest rule to follow but the most important one! If you are not 100% sure what species an animal is – do NOT touch it! It literally can mean life or death!

Learn exactly what to do if you are bitten by a venomous animal.

No matter how closely you follow herping safety rules, you are outdoors and accidents happen. Know exactly how to respond if you are bitten by a venomous animal.

Learn what animals are protected in your state / country and do not touch them.

Some states or countries have federally protected wildlife – that means if you touch them (even if they are dead) you can get into BIG trouble! If you come across an injured animal do not touch them. Instead find a park ranger to tell and let them handle the situation.

Keep a first aid kit with you.

Herping can take you into boggy waters and dense forests! You need to make sure you have a good first aid kit on hand for cuts, scrapes, bites, falls, and other injuries.
